In field ecology we have spent a lot of time learning about the natural environment around us and especially what should be there and what shouldn't. This was a group project that helped us to further understand the important impact of native Hawaiian species on the islands. We got to pick out different groups of native organisms and my group chose Native Hawaiian Stream Species.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
The 21st century skill that I feel this assignment address is global awareness because I had to expand my mindset on what native and non-native plants are and how to affect not only Maui's local ecosystem but the worlds ecosystem.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and what was most difficult about completing this task?
I am most proud of how our slideshow came together in such a short period of time. We were given only a certain amount of time and yet my group really came together as one to make an awesome presentation. The most difficult part of this project was some of the information on these native animals was very limited causing our information to be slim.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?
This helped improve my 21st century because through this unit/assignment I got the opportunity to expand my knowledge on different native and non-native species in our local environment as well as how invasive species affect all environments. Which grew my global awareness on understanding how species all around the world affect different environments.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?
If I could do this project again I would have my group practice presenting more. So that the overall flow of the presentation would be better.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past and how can you apply this to future learning?
What I learned from this project is how important it is to look at the world around you and realize how you impact it. In the past I have learned about human impacts but through this project I got a closer look at how beautiful the environment is. This makes me wanna work harder/try more to protect the beauty that surrounds me.
